Blackboard: [Skip To: Elluminate FAQs Skip To: Breeze Live FAQs ] Q: Do I need to do anything for my students to start using discussion boards in Blackboard? A: Yes. Access your course site, click on the discussion board button or access it through the communication button, and select Add Forum. Step through the required pieces and hit submit. Students can now use the discussion forum you created! Q: What are some of the ways Babson faculty are using discussion boards? A: A variety of ways. From teaching a course 80% online using discussion boards, to hosting one specific class via discussion boards, to office hours, to exam preparation, to continuing class discussions after class is over. You name it, it is being tried! Q: How do I shut off or end a discussion board? A: While there is no time release notion for Blackboard discussion boards, you can always modify the discussion forum and shut off new threads - this will essentially stop it or end the online conversation. Q: Can just a subset of my students use a discussion board? A: Yes. Blackboard group functionality includes discussion forums. This means once you create a group in Bb (manage groups) one of the functions you can give them is a discussion forum only the members of the group can use. Remember though, as a faculty member you need to start it all off by creating that group discussion board forum! Q: My students are asking for online group spaces. I don't know what this means or how to give it to them! Help! A: Elluminate is the tool for you! Contact CITG to setup online group spaces for your students to use. They can use these virtual collaboration spaces without you to talk over the internet, text chat, build or walk through their group presentation, and more! Q: Isn't Elluminate using Voice over IP? Isn't that an unstable technology? A: Babson has been using Voice over IP (VOIP) since 2000 with great success. Faculty are using it in the classrooms, their offices, conference rooms on campus and from their homes with no problems at all. The technology has come a long way from the days of poor quality and connection problems. Not to mention anyone with an internet connection can use it and it does not incur additional charges to be used. Contact CITG to give it a try - once you use it, you will be hooked! Q: I have a student traveling for a couple of my residential class sessions. Is there any way she can participate real time in the class sessions? A: Yes there is! As long as she has a PC and access to a solid internet connection, she can use Elluminate to participate in the class sessions. Contact CITG to learn how to use Elluminate, setup your online class sessions and get your student all setup! Q: Help! I have a guest speaker who can't make it to campus, but I need them to participate in the scheduled class session. What can I do? A: Use Elluminate to 'patch them into' your class! Contact CITG to learn how to use Elluminate, setup the online session and work with your guest speaker to get them up and running. Q: What kind of content can I use when teaching using Elluminate? A: Any and all kinds. PowerPoint slide shows, minus any animation, can be uploaded right into the Elluminate whiteboard. Other content such Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, Adobe PDFs and other applications like PTree or Minitab can be application shared via Elluminate.
